Ivy

Common Ivy (Hedera helix)

Folk names: English ivy, ground ivy, true ivy

Ivy is a familiar evergreen vine with woody stems and leaves that have three to five lobes. There are hundreds of cultivars based on leaf shape, size, and variegation. Ivy grows as a climbing vine or a trailing ground cover. It has two stages: In the juvenile stage, it climbs and spreads. In the adult stage, it becomes more shrub-like and produces clusters of greenish-white flowers that develop into blue-black berries.

Faery Folklore

Ivy is associated with faeries.

Magical Workings

Items to purchase when the plant is not available: Dried leaves; flower essence

Grow ivy on your property or place it as a houseplant in a front window to guard against negative energy. This placement will also attract luck. Make a small wreath of ivy and position it around the base of a candle as part of a binding spell. Include a couple of sprigs on your altar for spiritual journeys that take you inward as well as guide you back out into everyday life. Ivy is instrumental when seeking personal and spiritual growth. Incorporate white ivy leaves into your esbat ritual, as they are associated with the moon.

To represent the balance of light and dark, place ivy on your Mabon altar. Ivy is associated with the Goddess because it grows in a spiral, which is one of her symbols. Create a spiral on your altar with a strand of ivy or draw a spiral on a picture of ivy to symbolize your spiritual journey through the Wheel of the Year.
